Dead Rising is still a long way off, but we got our hands on an early build of Capcom's zombie-fest at Microsoft's Spring Showcase event in San Francisco Tuesday. It's still the same game we've seen at X05 last year and the same game we saw a few months ago, which is to say you can still pick up almost every item in sight and use it to smash zombie brains. Mmmm, brains.
We started off in a security room at the mall and decided to follow a yellow arrow to what we believe is a pharmacy on the other side of the map. That means we had to run through the mall, a courtyard, another part of the mall, and whatever else we would have had to run through if the game did not crash. Yes, it crashed a few times, but it's still way too early for Dead Rising. Yet, we couldn't help but relish the time we spent eliminating the zombie hoards.
In only a few minutes of gameplay, we smashed zombie brains with lead pipes. We knocked zombies over with shovels and then stabbed the shovel into their zombie brains. We found a sword and cleaved zombie bodies in half. We found a battle-axe and chopped zombies to bits. We threw benches, chairs, cash registers, coat hangers and potted plants at zombies. We hit hockey pucks at zombies. We took out crowds of zombies with a shotgun; single zombies with a handgun. We punched zombies and drop-kicked them too. We hear that you can even go into a hardware store, arm yourself with shower heads, throw them at zombies and lodge them in zombie brains, and watch the blood come out of the shower. Yeah, we pretty much destroyed zombies at will.
Dead Rising is simple, that much you already know. With hundreds of zombies on screen, the action gets tense. You need to time your swings of a weapon correctly or else the undead will munch on your neck, it's that simple. While we only had a few minutes in between crashes, we enjoyed what we played of this arcade-style zombie game, if there is such a thing. We'll bring you more on Dead Rising soon.
